Washers and rings are hardware components used in a variety of applications to provide a level surface or support for nuts and bolts. They come in different shapes, sizes, and materials, making them suitable for a wide range of projects. In this article, we'll take a closer look at washers and rings, including what they are, the materials they come in, the sizes available, and where you can find them.
What are Washers & Rings?
Washers and rings are hardware components designed to provide a level surface or support for nuts and bolts. They are placed between the nut and the surface of the material being fastened to prevent damage, distribute the load evenly, and improve the holding power of the fastener. Washers come in a variety of shapes, including flat, lock, and fender, while rings are typically used in plumbing applications to create a tight seal around pipes.
What Materials are Available?
Washers and rings come in a variety of materials, each with its own unique properties. Some of the most common materials include:
- Steel: Steel washers and rings are strong, durable, and cost-effective. They come in a range of grades, including stainless steel and alloy steel, making them suitable for a variety of applications.
- Brass: Brass washers and rings are corrosion-resistant and have good electrical conductivity. They are often used in electronic applications where conductivity is necessary.
- Nylon: Nylon washers and rings are lightweight, non-corrosive, and non-conductive. They are ideal for applications where electrical insulation is required, such as in the automotive and electronics industries.
- Rubber: Rubber washers and rings are flexible and provide a tight seal. They are commonly used in plumbing and automotive applications.
What Sizes are Available?
Washers and rings come in a variety of sizes, with the most common being metric and imperial. Metric washers and rings are measured in millimeters, while imperial washers and rings are measured in inches. The size of the washer or ring you need will depend on the application and the size of the fastener being used.
